Move to Evolve: How the Vital Bracelet Brought Digimon to Your Wrist

October 26, 2026

For two decades, a Digimon lived in your pocket. The original Digital Monster shipped in 1997 as a keychain-sized screen you fed, trained, and cleaned up after. Then, in 2021, Bandai turned the format inside out. The Vital Bracelet Digital Monster, released in Japan on March 13, 2021, replaced the pocket with a wristband -- and replaced button-mashing with your own two feet.

The pitch: exercise is the raising mechanic

On a classic V-Pet, you raise your partner by pushing a button. On the Vital Bracelet, the toy tracks your steps with an accelerometer and converts them into "Vitals," a resource your partner consumes on its way up the evolution tree. Walk more, and you feed your monster steadily. Slack off, and its growth stalls, then backslides. It is the same care-and-neglect loop Digimon fans grew up on, only now neglect means "you left it on the desk."

Dim Cards: whole rosters in a card slot

The bracelet has no built-in library. Instead, it relies on Dim Cards -- small, plastic data cards, each holding a themed roster of Digimon. Slot one in and your partner hatches from that set's Digitama. The original wave shipped with a Pulsemon-oriented card; a V-Mon card came bundled with the Special unit. Later Dim Cards added everything from Ghost Game stars to classic Adventure favorites, so the device's lineup grew as the collection you bought grew.

Battling by living your life

The Vital Bracelet leans hard on the real world. Tap your band against an NFC reader and your partner auto-battles -- no shoehorning, just touch. Pair the device with the companion smartphone app, Digimon Vital Bracelet Lab, and you can manage your monster's condition, fill a DigiDeck picture book, and battle other players online. The app side of the ecosystem was retired in March 2023 and succeeded by the Vital Bracelet Arena, but the hardware itself kept evolving.

A family line, three years in the making

From that March 2021 launch, Bandai spun the idea outward. The Ghost Game-themed Digivice -V- arrived on October 2, 2021, and wrapped the same mechanics in an anime-shaped shell. English markets finally got the device on July 21, 2022, under the name Vital Hero Digital Monster, in Black, Blue, and Red variants. By early August 2021, the Vital Bracelet had already passed 200,000 units sold in Japan -- a healthy sign for a gadget that could have been dismissed as a gimmick.

Why it matters for Digimon's history

The Vital Bracelet sits on a clean through-line: a franchise that began as a wearable toy in 1997, spent decades splitting time between screens and LCDs, and then -- with health-conscious 2020s hardware -- found its way back to the wrist. It proves the Virtual Pet engine is still flexible enough to absorb a fitness tracker without losing its soul. Raising a Digimon never stopped being about attention and routine. The Vital Bracelet just made your routine the gameplay.

If you have ever wished the V-Pet would get you out of the house, this is the device that finally did it. Strap on a band, slot a Dim Card, and go for a walk -- your partner needs the steps.
