Digivice History: From the D-3 to the Vital Bracelet

September 20, 2026

Almost as famous as the monsters themselves is the gadget their trainers wave around: the Digivice. Over two decades it went from a fictional toy within an anime to a genuinely distinctive line of handhelds — and then to a wearable you can actually strap on. Here's the honest timeline of how that happened.

Before the digivice: the Digital Monster V-pet

It helps to remember the digivice wasn't first. The Digital Monster, Bandai's virtual-pet device from 1997, predates it — that's the gadget that founded the whole franchise (see our What Is Digimon? guide). The first Digivice proper came with the Digimon Adventure anime in 1999: the Chosen Children in the show carry it, and in the toy world it became the first of the LCD "quest" type devices tied to an anime series. In the fiction, the original Digivice alone could only push a partner to the Child level; evolution past that needed the Crests and Tags.

The D-3 (2000)

With Digimon Adventure 02 came the D-3, the version the show introduced alongside the Digimentals. Fiction aside, the D-3's real claim in the toy line is that Bandai pitched it as a synthesis of the Digivice, the Digital Monster, and the Digimon Pendulum — pulling all three toys' functions into one device. The D-3 hardware was released in Japan in 2000, and its Marlinville calling card was an antenna used to locate Digimentals during play. Non-Japanese (American) releases received a simplified version with no antenna function.

The D-Ark (2001) and the Quest era

The D-Ark arrived with Digimon Tamers (2001). Famously, the Tamers got theirs from transforming card readers — a callback baked right into a toy that added "Card Slash" interaction with the physical Digimon Ultra card Game. In the early 2000s the line kept iterating: the D-Scanner (2002, tied to Digimon Frontier), then the Digivice iC (2006, Digimon Savers), which folded real V-pet care functions (heal, clean, feed) back into the digivice shell. It's a recurring theme: the "digivice" and the "V-pet" kept borrowing from each other.

The long road to a wearable: the Vital Bracelet (2021)

The biggest conceptual leap came decades later. The Vital Bracelet Digital Monster launched in March 2021 as a wearable virtual pet — a watch-type device. Instead of feeding and cleaning, a Digital Monster on the Vital Bracelet evolves based on your own movement and exercise, tracked via your heart rate. The monsters themselves are loaded from Dim Cards (numbered, themed evolution cards), and you battle by walking and moving in the real world. It's the franchise finally making good on "the digital world and the human world," putting the trainer's own activity at the center of the pet's growth.

The wearable line then split and evolved:

One honest caveat: the companion Vital Bracelet app had its service shut down in March 2023, which changed how online play and Data Transfer worked for owners — worth checking current app status before you invest in the wearable fleet.

The bigger arc

Seen over time, the digivice isn't one device — it's a sequence of "what if the trainer's gadget got real?" experiments. In the 90s it was a plot device you could buy; in the 2000s it was a quest machine that also raised a pet; by the 2020s it's a fitness wearable that raises a pet with your heartbeat. The hardware literally followed the anime's own reinventions of what a "digivice" means.
