Your Digital Monster is a little Tamagotchi with an attitude: a pocket pet that eats when it's hungry, poops on command, sleeps on a schedule, and — if you botch the job — turns into something you didn't want. The good news is that care mistakes are easy to avoid once you know what they are. Here are the classic slip-ups and the habits that dodge them.
1. Ignoring the call. The call light is your pet asking for help: it's hungry, low on strength, or past its bedtime. Answer it. On most of this line, if you let the light go out instead — around 15 to 20 minutes, sources differ by device — you earn a care mistake. Care mistakes matter twice over: they shorten your pet's life, and they quietly steer which evolution it reaches. A well-cared-for V-pet is far more likely to become a hero like Agumon, while a neglected one tends to end up as Betamon or worse. Golden rule: when the light's on, answer it.
2. Letting the poop pile up. Droppings build up on screen every couple of hours and someone has to clean them. On the original Digital Monster, roughly eight uncleaned piles will make your pet sick — the Digital Monster X manual warns the same. Tamagotchi gets sick from even fewer. Make the toilet icon a reflex and you'll never taste the skull.
3. Feeding without a thought. Keep those hunger hearts full, but don't stuff your pet. On the original V-pet, an "overfeed" is tracked when it refuses to eat because you've pushed too much — and overfeeding is one of the factors that shapes evolution and, overdone, poor health. Snacks on a classic Tamagotchi can cause illness, and an all-snack diet on the anniversary rerelease is widely reported to be lethal. Feed steadily, not constantly.
4. Skipping medicine. When a skull icon appears, your pet is sick or injured — often right before a growth stage, which is natural. Give medicine the moment you spot it; on many devices you'll need several doses and it may spit the first dose back. Leave it too long and it can die, and a sick or injured pet can't battle until healed.
5. Letting a bad kid run wild. If your pet beeps despite being full and happy, or refuses to eat, it's misbehaving — and on Tamagotchi especially, ignoring discipline shapes a worse-mannered, uglier evolution. A patient scold, timed right, pays off.
6. Skimping on sleep. A sleep-deprived pet is a cranky, short-lived one. On the original Digital Monster, a full eight hours of sleep is needed to refill its DP training gauge; missing the light-out call is also a care mistake. Put it to bed on time.
A handful of habits — answer the call, clean up, feed sensibly, dose on sickness, scold when needed, tuck in on schedule — keep a partner you're proud to evolve.
