Digimon Story: Time Stranger's Big Expansion Brings a New Hero to Iliad in 2027

November 03, 2026

If you've already walked the fractured worlds of Digimon Story: Time Stranger and thought the story was done, Bandai Namco has news for you: it isn't. In September, during Sony's State of Play, the publisher unveiled the game's first major expansion, A Hero's Eternal Legacy, and it's set to arrive sometime in 2027.

The setup is a time jump. The expansion picks up three years after the main game's climactic battle between the Agents and the Olympos XII — the conflict that decided the fate of both the human world and the Digital World of Iliad. In the aftermath, a new hero steps forward and sets off through unexplored corners of Iliad on a journey the official description sums up as one of "courage and friendship," with the goal of learning what it truly means to become legendary.

That's a deliberately light pitch, and it's worth reading it against what made Time Stranger special in the first place. The base game, developed by Media.Vision and released on October 3, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, told a far heavier story: a secret-agent protagonist caught in a city-leveling explosion, then reawakened eight years in the past to unravel the mystery of the world's collapse across time and parallel worlds. It was a turn-based RPG built around the bond between humans and Digimon, with more than 450 creatures to raise, and it earned a genuine reputation for treating the Digital World as something worth caring about.

The expansion leans into that. Bandai Namco confirms A Hero's Eternal Legacy will add more than 50 new Digimon alongside the new story content, which is a meaningful chunk of roster on top of an already deep one. It's coming to the same platforms as the base game — PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch, and PC — so no one is being left out.

If you haven't caught up yet, there's a bit of catching up to do. The Switch and Switch 2 versions of Time Stranger only landed on July 10, 2026, and the game has been steadily fed with smaller DLC episode packs through the year. That steady drip has kept the community busy, but A Hero's Eternal Legacy is positioned as the big one — a proper expansion rather than an episode pack, and the clearest sign yet that Bandai Namco sees Time Stranger as a long-running home for the franchise rather than a one-shot.

No specific release date has been confirmed beyond "2027," so it's a wait-and-see for now. But for anyone who finished the main story and wanted more of Iliad, this is the news to hold onto. More Digimon, a fresh hero, and a reason to return to one of the strongest Digimon games in years — that's worth marking on the calendar. For the uninitiated, Iliad isn't just a backdrop. It's the Digital World where Time Stranger sets much of its second half, a realm tied to the Olympos XII — the group of twelve god-like Digimon who anchor the story's late-game conflict. Revisiting it three years later, with new lands to explore and a fresh protagonist, is the expansion's real draw: it's a chance to see what the world looks like after the dust settles, and what a new generation of Tamers does with the peace the first hero fought for.
