If you've ever raised a classic Digital Monster V-pet, you know the biggest early moment isn't a battle — it's a fork in the road. As your creature leaves its Koromon stage, it commits to one of two iconic hero lines: the fire-breathing dinosaur Agumon or the timid wolf pup Gabumon. Which one you get depends on how you raise your pet, and community-maintained guides (like Humulos) note that on the original device your stats lean you one way — favoring HP, MP and Offense nudges you toward Agumon, while Defense, Speed and Brains nudge you toward Gabumon. The two heroes
Agumon is a small orange dinosaur — a Rookie (成長期, "Child") stage Digimon whose best-known move is Pepper Breath, and whose Fire / Vaccine typing in the card games has long tied it to courage.
Gabumon is famously the shy one. According to the official Digimon Reference Book, the timid Gabumon gathers up the data that Garurumon leaves behind and shapes it into a fur pelt to wear — which is exactly why it looks like a little wolf. Beneath that pelt it's secretly a Reptile Digimon. That contrast — brave dinosaur versus shy fake-wolf — is part of the enduring charm of the line.
The dinosaur line: Agumon → Greymon → WarGreymon
Following Agumon, the classic path climbs from Koromon up through the Champion Greymon and, depending on the game or device, MetalGreymon, before reaching WarGreymon — widely described as "the ultimate form" of the Greymon family and Agumon's Mega stage.
The wolf line: Gabumon → Garurumon → MetalGarurumon
On the Gabumon side, the partner evolves from the In-Training Tsunomon to Rookie Gabumon, then Champion Garurumon — the feared blue-and-white wolf — then Ultimate WereGarurumon, and finally the cyborg MetalGarurumon, whose body is packed with hidden weapons and whose Freezing Breath attack, per the official Digimon Encyclopedia, freezes anything it touches.
The classic ending: Omegamon
Here's what makes the two lines special: they were designed to meet. In the anime, partners Agumon and Gabumon grow toward WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, and when the two Jogress — that is, fuse — they become the united hero Omegamon (sometimes written Omnimagnamon / Omnimon), the gold-crowned warrior. Many games keep this rule: MetalGarurumon "can Jogress with WarGreymon to become Omnimon."
So the V-pet's big personality split isn't a dead end — it's a setup. Raise either line well, and the story is built to bring them back together.
